Frequently Asked Questions

Krav Maga

Q: “Should I be in good shape to get started?”

Not at all. When people first start our Syracuse/Camillus Krav Maga classes, they're all over the spectrum of physical fitness. Some are like star athletes. Others haven't worked out in years. Wherever you fall on this spectrum, don't worry about it. Just come, have a great time, and learn the awesome art of Krav Maga.

Q: “What should I do if I have a medical condition?”

If you have a medical condition, a past injury that required surgery and still troubles you from time to time, or anything else that may be of concern... Please speak to a medical professional before joining our classes.

Chances are you'll be more than able to come and enjoy learning Krav Maga. But there may be certain exercises that you'll have to take it slow on. Just let us know what your doctor says!

Q: “Are these classes violent? Can I get hurt?”

People often associate martial arts with violence. After all, you're learning self-defense techniques. However, there's a big difference between self-defense and violence.

Self-defense means you seek a peaceful way of life, only defending yourself if you absolutely have to. Violence means seeking out hostile situations.

While injury is possible with any form of exercise - we're proud to say that injuries are very rare here. We go to extreme lengths to make sure you learn Krav Maga in a safe, effective way.

Q: “What kind of atmosphere are these classes? (Fun? Serious? etc.?)”

Every one of our Krav Maga classes goes through a range of atmospheres. At times, it's highly focused and serious. At other times it's goofy and fun. We try to create a good mixture of both so you learn a lot while having fun.

Kids Martial Arts

Q: “Can my child get injured with Martial Arts, Karate, Tae Kwon Do?”

As a parent, I'm sure you've seen that kids can get injured doing just about anything. Martial Arts is no different, however we take safety very seriously here. Yes, injuries do sometimes happen. But we do everything in our power to avoid them. We do special exercises and stretches to make your child's body limber and flexible.

Q: “Are these Martial Arts, Karate, Tae Kwon Do classes fun?”

Yes! After all, these are children we're dealing with here. And kids love their fun. We do a variety of games and activities that have kids howling with laughter, and constantly smiling. We work hard here - but we play just as hard.

Q: “How old should my child be to start Martial Arts, Karate, Tae Kwon Do?”

Any age! Most kids range from 5 to teenagers, but we have kids who are younger, too. Classes are customized to suit children of different ages. A teenager receives very different treatment than a 6 year old, for example.

Q: “My child isn't athletic. Can they still participate in Martial Arts, Karate, Tae Kwon Do if they're not athletic?”

Yes! In fact, martial arts is a beacon of light for kids who just don't fit into team sports. Kids who couldn’t throw a ball well or run fast find that martial arts is accessible to them. It's something they excel at, and as a result, their confidence soars. Plus...no one is left out or sits the bench at Tearney's Martial Arts! We make sure everyone gets personal time to work on specific needs for success!

Q: “Do children's confidence & self-esteem grow with Martial Arts like Karate?”

Absolutely. Kids with low self-esteem often come out of their shells. As their skill level increases, they feel more and more confident. Other kids look up to them, just as they look up to other kids who are ahead of them. It builds a sense of confidence, pride, and teamwork.

Q: “Do boys AND girls take Martial Arts like Karate?”

Yes! We have a good mix of both girls and boys in our kids martial arts classes! Some people think that the boys are much “stronger and tougher,” but in reality this is not true. In fact, often girls are the stronger ones!

Q: “Do Martial Arts like Karate make kids violent?”

No way! Martial arts is about peace, harmony and diplomacy. It teaches children how to AVOID fights - not pick them.

Adult Martial Arts

Q: “What level of fitness is required for martial arts?”

You'll get in shape as you go. You don't have to be in great shape to start.

The great thing about martial arts is you can be at any fitness level and do great. That's because there's no rush or pressure to do anything quickly. You can learn at your own pace.

If you have a knack for it, you can speed through techniques. If it's a bit harder for you, take your time. All we care about is that you're having fun, learning and progressing, and staying safe.

Q: “I've heard Martial Arts is violent. Is this true?”

Absolutely not! Martial Arts is about peace, balance & harmony. It's about becoming in touch with your body and all of life. It's about happiness and fulfillment.

The self-defense techniques you learn help you become flexible and strong. They help you become confident and proud.

The guiding principles of Martial Arts help you diffuse situations before violence becomes a part of them. However, if a hostile situation does ever come about, you'll have the tools you need to keep you and your loved ones safe.

Q: “Is there a risk for injury with martial arts?”

Any sport or form of exercise comes with a risk of injury. However, there are a few things that make our program very safe. It's because of these few things that we barely see any injuries with our program.

Warm Up Exercises: At the beginning of every class, we go through a series of warm up exercises. These exercises get your muscles and joints ready and warmed up for martial arts training.

Supervision: Every class is supervised by trained, certified professionals. We watch carefully to make sure no student is doing anything in a dangerous or unsafe way.

In short, we place a tremendous amount of focus on fun and safety. It's because of this that we feel confident telling you that while there is risk for injury with our program - it's a very small risk.
